CORPUS CHRISTI - The American Bank Center once again welcomed patrons of all ages to Corpus Christi Comic Con for a weekend filled with Cosplay, Merch, Gaming, and celebrity guests. This year attendees arrived early and lined up outside the door prior to the events scheduled starting time.
The wait did not detour the guests who showed up in some impressive costumes. One thing that was immediately noticeable at the convention was merchandise rooms larger selection of vendors.
Regular attendees will tell you that the merch room is a first and must stop to all attendees. For collectors or just the casual fan this is an area that takes time to work your way through in order to avoid missing a sought after prize.
For some the allure of the vendors is a long lost piece of their childhood, or even that one toy they always wanted but never got their hands on. For others it is a showcase of creations made by independent artists ranging from stickers, clothing, and jewelry.
If gaming is your thing you won't be left out as the convention does feature a variety of games that include table top, console, PC, and arcade cabinets. The only downside we found was that the classic arcade cabinets of old were now replaced with the new 1up arcade machines.
Though the 1up cabinets boast classic titles and an array of classics many of us spent hours playing, they lack a certain feel that the nostalgic players miss. Make no mistake, you're sure to have a fun time at the gaming section and shouldn't pass by without giving it a look; we just miss the old machines.
As long as you're in the merch room you have to stop by the far side of the vendors section if you want a chance to see/meet this years celebrity guests. This year was a bit special as WWE Legend Mick Foley and Lou Diamond Phillips of La Bamba were in attendance.
La Bamba being an especially classic movie in our area of South Texas made Phillips attendance special for many who live in and around Corpus Christi. We don't think there are many people in our area who haven't screamed "RITCHIE!!!!" more than once in their lives.
While stopping to meet Phillips we just had to ask him about the rumored Young Guns 3 script that was reported earlier in the month by various outlets. Phillips confirmed this and told us that at the moment "Emilio has the script and is trying to get it made right now."
Fans will remember Emilio Esteves who filmed alongside Phillips in the previous 2 Young Guns movies that have also become classics in the hearts of many. Esteves played Billy the Kid along side Philips' character Jose Chavez y Chavez.
At the time of this event Philips also told us that in honor of La Bamba's anniversary he would soon be donating the Harmony Stratotone his character Ritche Valens played early in the film. Having kept the movie guitar all these years Philips donated it just yesterday 8/20/24 to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
It was a great convention that was topped off with the annual Nerd Prom during the evening hours. Those who attended were treated to a mixer of costumes, music, and friendly faces from all over the state.
Be on the lookout for the next CCTX Comic Con as they never fail to disappoint.
