Eric Johnson: Live at the Paramount

Austin - It was a night for music as the Paramount theater as they welcomed their hometown boy and resident guitar slinger Eric Johnson to the stage. As Johnson embarks on his "Treasure Tour" he made sure one of the stops was in his home of Austin.

This two set performance started with an acoustic set which is not something the casual listener would expect from Johnson. However those who follow his music closely know that there is a whole other side to this musician than just his classic hit "Cliffs of Dover."

Those who were not familiar with Johnsons acoustic stylings were more than pleasantly

surprised as his technical skill was apparent from the first note. The dexterity of his playing is a constant no matter which guitar he has in his hand.

One striking feature of his acoustic set was the clarity of his playing. Every note rang through and just had a certain shine to it.

If I had to reference another guitar player to give our readers an idea of what the acoustic set sounded like. I would liken Johnsons acoustic tone and "shine" that of Tommy Emmanuel.

If you are familiar with Tommy Emmanuel you will understand what we mean when we say Johnsons acoustic playing has a certain shine to it. The notes just ring and resonate in a way that sounds fresh, new, and completely new to the ears.

Combined with Johnsons finger speed and use of musical theory this made for an impressive and enjoyable experience. Moreover, those who only know of his electric talents left the show understanding a whole new side to this artist.

The second set started off with the energy you would expect from an Eric Johnson performance. A fast but steady pace of rock chords and "tasty" licks layered over them.

Some would wonder, has Johnson lost a step in these later years? Has he slowed the pace of his live music as many others do?

Not at all. The second set had the same pace and energy that many will remember from the past albums.

Johnson's playing is just as vigorous and lively as it ever was with an energy that is unique to the player. Should Johnson be in your area during the "Treasure Tour" it would be 100% worth getting a ticket.

For those in Texas, it was just announced days ago that Johnson will be performing at the Dallas International Guitar Festival which is set to take place from may 5 -7. Should you be interested in buying, selling, or trading a guitar, looking to pick up a vintage axe, or just see some amazing performances, just stop by the festival.
