Corpus Christi - It was a rainy day but that did not stop hundreds of people from gathering at Brewsters Street for a night filled with heavy metal music. The audience was backed tight as several bands took the stage and cranked their amps to ten and let the music rip.
Among the opening acts was Seyer Mind, a new group formed and fronted by Alice native Chris Reyes. For a newly formed group the performance was pretty spot on and the crowd reaction was that of approval.
*Editor's Note: At the time of this article's addition to the website, it has been announced that Reyes will be performing with DIOSA as they tour and open for Pantera in Hungary. Reyes is filling in on Bass for the group.
Though they were one of the first groups to perform ,they set the tone for the crowd's expectation of the evening. They wanted metal, and Seyer Mind gave it to them.
Overall it was a great performance with very impressive guitar work by both Reyes and Jayden Baker. This would be a group to keep your eye on.
Throughout the evening the bands kept up the pace that was set by Seyer Mind and the crowd thus far was satisfied with what they heard. However, the moment they had been waiting for was finally upon them.
It was time for Ill Nino to headline the show. The group took to the stage in all their glory as frontman Marcos Leal engaged the audience.
Leal is a Texas native and local to the area. Needless to say, he knows the Corpus Christi crowd and what they expect.
As the set started the crowd erupted and looked like a sea of people in the middle of a storm. Fueled by the music being performed, the energy which was already high, only intensified with each song.
Bassist Laz Pina reflected the energy of the crowd as he traveled the stage while maintaining the rock solid pace of the group. Consistently in the pocket his musicianship was in rare form during this performance.
Every now and then you get the right band, on the right night, for the right crowd. However, in South Texas, Ill Nino proved they are the right band on any night.
